Onto Toronto
27 June 2009

Hello.

This morning I woke up too early, to a horrible alarm clock which I had forgotten to unset, and it gave me chest pains. To put matters right, I tried waking up all over again, this time to Linda Thompson’s Versatile Heart. Things have improved dramatically as a result.

We’re at Lee’s Palace, Toronto tonight, which has been sold out for some time apparently. So thanks for that, Torontonians, from us Glasgonians.

We saw your show in Montreal last night (26JUN09) and it was amazing. the perfect combination of bright sparkling music and often gut-wrenchingly sad lyrics. Brilliant! As for Karen Dalton, you’re not alone in appreciating her. I got my hands on her 1971 album “In My Own Time” a while back and love it. It may be the one you’re referring to since you mention “In My Own Time”. Sadly, there are more Karen Daltons out there, great artists that faded into obscurity and usually not a fate of their own doing.

Thanks for the fab show in Montreal. I’m a Canadian fan since 2001 who has purchased all of your CDs! You can thank a small internet radio station out of San Francisco for making me love your work – SOMA-FM, without whom I’d never had heard you, or so many other incredible indie artists and bands.

Best of luck on the rest of your tour. We’ll go back and see you next time you’re in town. And thanks to you and Carey for signing our CD and spending a few moments chatting with us.

P.S. In passing, I’d asked you if Camera Obscura had ever covered a Joy Division song in concert, citing a mysterious mp3 I had that I thought was your band. The live mp3 I have of Camera Obscura is “Chicago – New York”, and it was Aisler’s Set doing a live cover of Joy Division’s “Walked In Line” that I was confusing with you. Mystery solved… albeit only one that was mysterious, or interesting to me. :-)

I knew the show was gonna sell out, so I bought my ticket on the first day when it went onsale. Glad that I did that!! You guys are very well loved here in Toronto(well, probably same in everywhere), I can almost guarantee that your show will sell out everytime when you guys are in town. Great show as always at Lee’s Palace.(some Glasgow bands had played at this venue before too: The Delgados, Sons and Daughters, recently the lengendary Vaselines. Lee’s Palace just seems to have a magical connection to Glasgow bands). I travelled to see you guys in Montreal the night before too. It was absolutely fantastic seeing you guys back to back in Montreal and Toronto. Hope one day I could go to Glasgow to see you guys in your own soil. I am sure that would be very special! Kenny, don’t know if you still remember me, I am that Asian guy talking to you after both the Montreal and Toronto shows. Once again, thanks for the photo and autographs! Please come back to Canada soon, I will try to do both Montreal & Toronto again. Maybe Vancouver too if time and money permit! Big cheers!!

Great to see you in Millvale for my second show—worth the drive up from DC.

I loved how the guy on the trumpet (oof..sorry I missed your name!) turned it up a notch from the show I caught in DC—especially on that cymbal! Fun to watch. Carey did well on the bass and it was an all around solid show by everyone else.

Really enjoyed the rain on the roof between songs.

Moving to Cleveland at the end of the summer. Hope you’ll come the next time you’re in the States. Happy to host or treat you to a round. It’s the least I can do for a couple nights of great music.

Thanks for signing my album, Tracyanne.
