Camera Obscura News

Get your spring on. 29 March 2010

I am the news.

Having completed two round-the-world trips in the early months of this year, we are now pleased to present our upcoming schedule for Spring and Summer.
We are really happy that we will finally be making it over to Brazil for the first time. Thank you to the people who’ve waited patiently and impatiently for a long time to see us, we are really looking forward to being there.

Following this will be some US shows, including appearances at Coachella and Sasquatch festivals. Please note, our support for the West Coast tour will be Californian band Princeton, with the exception of the San Francisco shows where we will play with Best Coast at the GAMH and the mighty Yo La Tengo at the Fillmore. I encourage you to be swots and go and check out their music. The April tour will also see us return to Mexico for two shows, a definite favourite place to play (and eat).

Having consistently missed their shows because of our own tours, I am also really looking forward to getting to see Midlake and Grizzly Bear, who we are playing on an amazing bill with in Cork in June. We’re also honoured to playing our first All Tomorrow’s Parties with Pavement adding us to their curated bill. We don’t know exact day we’re playing yet but it’s in Minehead (UK) the weekend of the 14th-16th May.

Finally, I want to tell you about a special release we have put together as a kind of tribute to Richard Hawley, who has been one of my favourite artists for years. It will be released as a two track 7” featuring our version of his gorgeous song The Nights Are Cold≠ accompanied by Richard’s remix of our own songThe Sweetest Thing.

I think the first time I heard of Richard Hawley was when our album Biggest Bluest Hifi came second to his as “best album of the year” in some Spanish awards thing. I borrowed the album, Late Night Final, from Kenny and listened hoping it would be rubbish so I could dismiss it and proclaim dramatically that we‚d been robbed. Unfortunately, it was the record to have most excited me on a first listen ever. It went straight on repeat, I wrote him an email of gushing admiration and phoned Tracyanne to tell her I’d heard something amazing and would bring it round to her house as soon as possible.

Tackling a song from a record we love so much was quite daunting but I hope you like our version and enjoy the coupling with his Sheffield-created remix.
Finally, as Easter is nearly here, thanks to Bek and Graeme for turning myself and Tracyanne into decorative eggs.
Thanks, Carey.
